List of Helpful Podcasts

Posted on 29. Jul, 2009 by admin in Law Grads, Law School, News

Ok, so this is a few weeks late, but to be honest this gig doesn’t pay that great and I’m sure all five members of our audience will understand. That’s a joke, by the way, our audience is at least 15 strong by now.

Personally I’m not an expert when it comes to podcasts. I’m a poor student and can only afford the ‘tin can and string’ internet plan, which means that I have to be sparing with my downloads. But I’ve tried to pick up some that I think would be awesome, even if I’m not a regular subscriber myself. If anyone does have a podcast that they love, please send us an email and recommend it.

Finally, Australia is a little bit behind the times. There aren’t all that many must-have programs that come out of Australia. But judging by the way law firms are adopting Twitter, I wouldn’t be suprised to see some of them come up with some semi regular discussion panels in the near future.

Australian Podcasts

Edit: Law – The downside to compiling these kind of lists is the shame that comes with missing something that should obviously be included. ABC Radio National’s Law podcast should quite clearly be here, but I’m sorry to say I wasn’t familiar with it before today. Thanks Matt, for letting me know about it :)

Dr Karl – Easily our country’s coolest scientist, Dr Karl has been well ahead of the curve when it comes to podcasts. A must have.

Big Ideas – this is another ABC podcast, that brings discussion about a variety of topics. It’s not law specific, but it’s definitely interesting. Even if you’re not interested, it’s great to listen to this stuff so you seem more interesting at networking functions.

Insiders – Another ABC program, this is focused on what is happening in politics.

Hack Daily and Hack Highlights – Triple J’s Hack also put up their program for you to download. Occasionally they will cover legal issues, but it’s more relevant just because it’s Triple J. They often deal with young people’s issues and it’s a really well put together program.

Australian Government RSS Feed and Podcast Index – this is a bit of a cheat, because mostly it’s a list of RSS feeds and few podcasts. However it’s a good list of all Government communication programs so it’s worth a look if you have an interest in a niche area.

The Small Business Mentor Club - This is something that I’ve not listened to personally, but it’s on my ‘list of things to try when I get some more bandwidth’.

Podcasts From Outside Australia

Obviously a lot of these will not be dealing with Australian laws, but if you stick to the policy and generalist stuff you’ll still find it all very interesting.

University of Duke School of Law - Discussing things such as ‘The Future of U.S. Policy on global Warming’, ‘Moving Education Forward: Perspectives and Innovations in Education Law’ and ‘A Responsibility to Lead: How Lawyers can fill Our Leadership Deficit’.

Yale Law School – With podcasts such as ‘The Hon. Louise Arbour, former United Nations High commissioner of Human Rights, discussing “Peace and Justice: A framework for co-existence” and ‘Peacekeeping: Testing the Limits of the Concept of an International Community’.

Georgetown University – Discussions including ‘Women’s Human rights in Africa’ and ‘WTO – Future Prospects of the World Trading System’.

Stanford Law School – This is run by Stanford’s American Constitution Society for Law and Policy and has podcasts such as ‘Social Psychologist Philip Zimbardo explains how good people turn evil’ and ‘former Navy Judge Advocate General … discusses military commissions and the war on terror’.

Harvard Law School – This is run by the Berkman Centre for Internet & Society and has discussions such as ‘The G-fail’ (concerning the dangers of lax social networking security), and ‘Alexander Macgillivray of Google on the Google Book Search Settlement’.  My superficial look at this has me a little disappointed. I’m suprised it’s not more legal centric – but it is still definitely interesting and well worth a go.

So that is just a list to get us all started. If anyone finds anymore that they have come to really enjoy then please send them through to us and we’ll revisit the list in a month or two.
